It’s the triumph of using my “椒盐普通话” (Sichuan-accented Mandarin) to successfully translate “儿菜” (a unique local vegetable) for a bewildered tourist at QingShiQiao Market, feeling like an unofficial ambassador of daily Chengdu life. It’s in the small traditions, like my neighbor’s Corgi, who has been crowned the “Panda Base Branch Cat” by the regulars at People’s Park for his dedicated loitering under the tea tables—so much so that the tea master always saves him a bowl of water.
